are rich text fields coming in an upcoming release?

the option for bold, italic, underline, bullets, lists and hyperlinks would all be very welcome for the Notes and Specification fields. any word when or if this functionality is coming?

    thanks

I'd love to see this in Axure RP too, but we can't commit to it for the next release.

What would you expect in the specification if you could format the notes and annotations in Axure RP?

Currently, any text that is entered into the notes field shows up with Normal style in the Word document. So if Normal is set to Times New Roman and 16pt, that's what you get in the spec without having to change the formatting of the notes in Axure RP.

If formatting is allowed in the notes, would you still expect a Word style to be applied to that text or would you expect a direct transfer of the rich text in whatever font style it appears in Axure RP?

This means that you would have to enter notes in Axure RP using the same font style as you want in the specification which could lead to a lot of formatting as you are entering notes (or the need for styles for the notes and annotations in Axure RP).

    Thoughts?

Re: are rich text fields coming in an upcoming release?

being that i used Axure mainly for its spec abilities, having optional rich formatting would allow me a lot more flexibility in writing annotations.

for example, it would allow me to use bold or italics for emphasis, create nice lists for the values of drop down menus and the like.

given the number of specs i generate with Axure, i really miss the lack of this level of formatting for Notes and specification fields.

i realize you can apply styles to your output template but there's still a fair amount of flexibility gained by having Word simply read in the RTF formatting that's part of the document - e.g. bullets, bolding, etc.

    does this make sense?

Re: are rich text fields coming in an upcoming release?

    Yep, that makes sense.

The concern is if you want to change the font family for example on all of your page notes in the specification.

Let's say, by default, page notes in Axure RP are in Arial, but you want the format to be Times New Roman in the spec.  If Word styles no longer apply to the notes and we do a straight dump of the RTF, each set of page notes will have to be set to Times New Roman when editing.

Now, let's say you want to change the format to Verdana in the spec. Each note and annotation would have to be reformated.

It seems like a base style for the notes and annotations for mass formatting changes might help to address this issue. It just adds a little more complexity to specification generation.

Any ideas... or do you think styles for notes and annotations would not be necessary?

i actually don't think i (or anyone else) would need that type of control over their notes. the template editor gives one enough flexibility since the ability to style and position text is more than sufficient. so no, i don't think styles would be necessary at all.

I agree.  For me, the most important options would be Bolding and creating Unordered lists.  After that in order of priority would be Ordered Lists, Font size, Italics, Underline, and Colors.  I don't mind if the font style can't be changed, as long as you leave it at Arial.  But if we could just get Bold, and the Lists, I think it would solve most people's immediate need.

Re: are rich text fields coming in an upcoming release?

Personally I think it would be nice if the imported Word styles are used, not a straight dump from the RTF. That way I only have to change the Word template, not all the page notes in Axure.

I agree for the rest with the request, but would like to add the following:

    • Headings (1 till 4, since those styles are already specified)
    • Unordered lists (as requested)
    • Ordered lists
    • Bold formatting
    • Basic tables (no fancy formatting needed, but it would be great if you could add more table data, not just the annotation tables)

Re: are rich text fields coming in an upcoming release?

So is this in the roadmap yet?

One other option that would really be useful is ability to link text in the specification to other pages/sections of the axure page or external links. This is useful for both developers and client so that user can click on the link to read more about the linked word. In the word document just showing the link in bracket next to the linked text will be good enough.

I really need this feature and am trying to find if there is a way I can achive it with the existing tools, any suggestions?

This is on the roadmap, but unfortunately did not make the next update (5.5 expected early next year). Adding links to the notes is not possible currently without editing the Word document after it is generated.

Re: are rich text fields coming in an upcoming release?

This is unfortunate this is not making it's way to 5.5. It would be nice to even have just bold, italic and lists and let the Word template look after the look and feel at spec time. Would definitely use this now and it would make my specs easier to read.
