If page1 contains a link to page1, the hand cursor shows when you hover it but nothing happens if you click. I have a search results page and on that page I'd like the user to be able to enter a new search term, click the "go" button and for the page to be reloaded showing results from the new search term. However, it the "go" button doesn't work because it links to the same page it appears on.

A page should be able to link to itself. You can also choose the option to "Reload current page" in the link properties dialog. Are you setting a variable after the "go" button is clicked and then using OnPageLoad with a condition to show the results in a dynamic panel?

In my opinion, you want to display result region after click "go" button. So I think you can use a dynamic panel. set it hidden default, and set it show after click "go" button.
