WIDGET AND PAGE NOTES
Widget notes and page notes are text metadata associated with widgets and pages. They can be used to record specifications, relate widgets and pages to project requirements, document changes, and communicate with teammates. Note fields can be named. There are a few different types of note fields available for widgets—text, select list, number, and date—while pages have only text-type note fields.
Notes are visible both in the Axure RP interface and in the browser when viewing the HTML output, but are editable only in RP. Widgets that have notes or interactions are marked with a blue footnote icon displayed at the top-right corner of the widget when shown on the canvas. An asterisk in the Notes tab of the Inspector is another indicator that a widget or page has notes.
By default, widgets and pages start out with a single text-type note field called "Note".

WORKING WITH NOTES IN RP
ADDING AND EDITING NOTES
To add or edit notes, select a widget or page on the canvas. In the Inspector pane, switch to the Notes tab. Type or make a selection in a field.
To add rich text formatting to a text-type field, first click into the field to select it. A "formatting" button will appear above the field, to the right. Click that button to access the styling toolbar that you can use to change the font and color, and add bullets to the note.
ADDING NOTES FIELDS
Use the "Project > Page Notes Fields..." menu command, or click "Customize Fields" in the "Notes" tab of the Inspector pane, to open the "Page Notes Fields" dialog.
You can add, remove, reorder, and rename notes fields. Click the green "+" icon to add a new field. To delete a field, select it and click the red "x" icon. Use the blue "up" and "down" arrows to reorder the fields. Slow double-click a field name to rename it.
Use the "Project > Widget Notes Fields and Sets..." menu command, or click "Customize Fields" in the "Notes" tab of the Inspector pane, to open the "Widget Notes Fields and Sets" dialog.
On the left side of the "Fields" tab, you can add, remove, reorder, and rename notes fields. Use the "Add" dropdown to click the type of new field you want to add: text, select list, number, or date. When you add a field of the select list type, use the right side to type the list of options that will appear in the select list.
To delete a field, select it and click the red "x" icon. Use the blue "up" and "down" arrows to reorder the fields. Slow double-click a field name to rename it.
NOTE SETS (WIDGETS)
You can add widget notes fields that already exist in the project to different sets. When editing in Axure RP, you can switch between different sets via the Fields dropdown in the Inspector's Notes tab. Use notes sets when different users need different sets of fields, or when you need different sets of fields at different times in the project lifecycle.
In the "Project > Widget Notes Fields and Sets..." dialog, click the "Sets" tab to create and organize sets. On the left side of the tab, click the green "+" icon to add a new set. Slow-double-click the set name to rename it.
On the right side of the tab, use the "Add" dropdown to choose which note fields to add to the set. On either side, use the blue "up" and "down" arrows to reorder and the red "x" icon to delete.
COPYING NOTES (WIDGETS)
To copy and paste notes from one widget to another, select the widget with the notes to be copied. Copy the widget. Then, select the widget(s) you want to paste the notes to, right-click, and and choose "Paste Special > Paste Widget Notes".
CLEARING NOTES (WIDGETS)
Clear all widget notes on a page via the "Arrange > Clear All Notes" menu command.
THE FOOTNOTE ICON (WIDGETS)
By default, widgets with notes or interactions are indicated by a blue, numbered footnote icon displayed at the top-right corner of the widget when shown on the canvas. To toggle visibility of the footnote icon, use the "View > Show Footnotes" menu command.
Footnotes can be renumbered in several ways. To change the number of an individual footnote, click on the number next to the widget name in the Inspector and type in the desired number. You can also use the commands in the "Arrange > Footnotes" submenu to increment or decrement the footnote. To renumber all of a page's footnotes at once, use the "Arrange > Footnotes > Renumber All Footnotes" menu command.
NOTES IN OUTPUTS
THE HTML OUTPUT
When viewing the HTML output in a web browser, widget and page notes appear in the Notes tab of the sidebar—page notes at the top, widget notes underneath.
In addition, any widgets with notes will have blue footnote icons in their upper-right corners in the main content area. Click an icon to display that widget's notes. (Use the "Toggle Footnotes" icon in the Pages tab to toggle the visibility of all footnote icons on the page. Learn more about options in the HTML output's sidebar in our HTML Output Sidebar training article.)
CONFIGURING NOTES IN THE HTML OUTPUT
Control how notes appear in the HTML output via the Widget Notes and Page Notes tabs of the Generate HTML dialog (available via "Publish > Generated HTML Files…"). You can choose whether to include widget or page notes in the sidebar, whether to include widget footnotes, and whether widget footnote icons feature widgets' names (off by default). You can also reorder note fields in these two dialogs by clicking a note field name and then using the right-hand arrow buttons.
THE WORD SPECIFICATION
Page notes appear in Axure RP's generated Word specification at the top of each page section, while widget notes appear as part of widget tables. Read our Word specification training article to learn about available configuration options for notes in the Word specification output.
